Ismail Muhammad Yassin Abu Shamala (born September 1, 1941 in Beit Daras – died November 22, 2015 in Ramallah ) was a Palestinian politician , diplomat , and member of the Fatah movement and the Palestinian Revolutionary Council . He served as the Palestine Liberation Organization's ambassador to Afghanistan , the State of Palestine's ambassador to Bulgaria , and the governor of the North Gaza Governorate .
Early life and education
Abu Shamala was born on September 1, 1941 in the village of Beit Daras in the Gaza District during the British Mandate over Palestine . His family was expelled and the village was destroyed by Zionist gangs in the 1948 Nakba War , where they fled to the Gaza Strip and settled in the Bureij camp .
He received his primary and preparatory education in the schools of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the camp, and received his secondary education in the Nuseirat camp and obtained his high school diploma in 1957. He obtained a BA in Arabic Literature from Beirut Arab University.
Practical life
After graduating, he moved between Saudi Arabia , where he joined the Fatah movement , and also to Syria . He assumed the duties of the Fatah movement's representative in Algeria until 1973, and he also took over the unified media in Damascus until 1983.
He was appointed as the PLO representative to Afghanistan in 1985, and later as the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Bulgaria until 1994.
Israel allowed him to return to the Palestinian territories after the signing of the Oslo Accords , where he was appointed Director General of the Palestinian Ministry of Local Government on December 5 , 1994. On August 1, 1996, he was appointed Assistant Undersecretary of the Palestinian Ministry of Local Government .
On March 27, 2005, he was appointed Governor of North Gaza Governorate . On January 1, 2009, he was granted the rank of Minister .
In August 2009, he won the elections for the Fatah Revolutionary Council held during the Sixth Fatah Conference in Bethlehem and became a member of it.
He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palestinian Electricity Company between 2006 and 2010.
