Saeed Abbasi was a Palestinian politician and diplomat who was born in the town of Silwan in Jerusalem . He was the first Palestinian ambassador to Senegal , and died on May 27, 2004.
His life
Said Abbasi was born in the town of Silwan in Jerusalem. After completing his university studies in the Jordanian capital, Amman , he received a scholarship to complete his studies in the United States . However, on his way to the United States, he met a group of Algerian fedayeen, among whom was the late Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. He accompanied this group and joined the ranks of the resistance in Algeria .
He then moved to Morocco after Algeria gained its independence, and worked as a teacher. He established the Committee to Support the Palestinian People in Morocco to acquaint the Moroccan people with the dimensions of the Palestinian cause and urge them to support and back the struggle of the Palestinian people. In 1964, Said Abbasi joined the ranks of the Fatah movement . In 1968, he moved to Mauritania and was able to broadcast the first radio program in Arabic and French dedicated to talking about Palestine in Africa . This program was credited with mobilizing African public opinion to support the Palestinian cause . Then, in 1974, Abu Ali Iyad assigned him to travel to the Democratic Republic of Guinea, which had recently gained its independence, and open an office for the Fatah movement in the capital, Conakry .
In 1978, the late President of the Palestinian National Authority, Yasser Arafat, sent Said Abbasi, accompanied by his wife, Mayada Bamia and father Ibrahim Ayyad, to Latin America and tasked him with establishing offices for the Palestine Liberation Organization in Venezuela, Peru and Chile .
Said Abbasi then returned to the African continent and was appointed as the Palestinian ambassador to Angola , where he was received by Angolan President Agostinho Neto. Said Abbasi supported national liberation movements in Africa and enjoyed close relations with African national action leaders such as Tambo, leader of the South African revolutionaries , Sam Nujoma, leader of the SWAPO party in Namibia, and Amilcar Cabral, leader of Guinea-Bissau . In 1989, Said Abbasi moved to Senegal , which was the first country in Africa to recognize the Palestinian state after its establishment was announced in the National Council in Algeria.
His death
Saeed Abbasi was the representative of Palestine in Senegal when he was diagnosed with cancer. The former Senegalese President Abdou Diouf issued a decision to treat him at the state's expense. Saeed Abbasi died on May 27, 2004, and was buried in the Martyrs' Cemetery in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
