Ahmad Youssef Al-Hassan was a Syrian politician, engineer, and academic of Palestinian origin from the village of Al-Mashirfa, in the Umm al-Fahm district. He also held Canadian citizenship. A distinguished researcher in the history of the Arabic language, as well as in Islamic science and technology, he earned his Ph.D. from University College London.
From 1968 to 1971, he served as Syria’s Minister of Petroleum, Electricity, and Industry, and from 1973 to 1978, he was President of the University of Aleppo. In 1974, he founded the Institute of Arab Sciences at the University of Aleppo. In 1982, he emigrated to Canada.
Dr. Al-Hassan received the Legion of Honour from the French Republic and authored numerous works on the history of science and technology, many of which have been translated into several languages. He served as a visiting professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of London, and in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto.
He was also a member of the International Committee of UNESCO’s Project for the Study of Various Aspects of Islamic Culture and served as Editor-in-Chief of Volume IV, Science and Technology in Islam. Additionally, he was a member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations University in Tokyo and the Editorial Board of the Journal for the History of Arabic Science.
