Azzam Najib al-Ahmad was born in the village of Rummanah in the Jenin Governorate on November 14, 1948. He is married and has three daughters. He completed his primary education at Rummanah Elementary School and his secondary education at Jenin Secondary School. He earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Baghdad in 1974.
Al-Ahmad was appointed as the head of the PLO office in Iraq between (1979-1994), and held a number of ministerial positions in the Palestinian Authority, including the Ministry of Public Works and Housing between (1996-2003), and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology between (2003-2005), and he was Deputy Prime Minister in 2007.
Al-Ahmad joined the Fatah movement in his early youth, participated in its national activities, and was active in the student movement, where he headed the General Union of Palestinian Students/Iraq Branch between (1971-1974), was the Vice President of the Executive Committee of the General Union of Palestinian Students between (1974-1980), and was the President of the General Union of Arab Students between (1976-1980), and became a member of the Palestinian National Council since 1974.
 Al-Ahmad assumed a number of organizational responsibilities within the Fatah movement. He was the movement’s official in Iraq between (1975-1994), was elected as a member of the movement’s Revolutionary Council in 1989, won membership in the Legislative Council on behalf of the Fatah movement in Jenin Governorate in the first legislative elections in 1996 and the second in 2006, and became the head of the Fatah bloc in the Legislative Council since 2006. He was also chosen as a member of the Fatah Central Committee at the movement’s sixth conference in 2009, and a member of the PLO Executive Committee on behalf of the Fatah movement in more than one organizational term, and became the head of the Department of Arab and Parliamentary Affairs in it. 
 Al-Ahmad took charge of the reconciliation file with Hamas, and led the Fatah delegation to dialogue with Hamas in more than one round in the capitals of Arab and Islamic countries. He signed more than one document to end the division, including the Cairo Declaration in 2011. He participated in the Palestinian delegation negotiating the terms of the truce with the occupying state in the aftermath of the 2014 war, and made official visits to Arab and foreign countries at the head of a delegation representing Fatah, the Palestinian Authority, and the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Al-Ahmad is hosted on various local and Arab media outlets to comment on developments in the Palestinian issue. He is a regular guest on the Palestinian Authority’s satellite channel, and he makes statements that express the position of Fatah, the Authority, and the PLO.
