Wajih Abu Dhareefa (1968-) is a Palestinian journalist , researcher and professor of political science , born in the town of Abasan al-Kabira in Khan Yunis Governorate, south of the Gaza Strip . He studied primary school at Ahmed Abdel Aziz and Abdel Qader al-Husseini schools, and secondary school at Hatem al-Taie Secondary School, graduating in 1986. He also obtained a diploma in public relations and media from Al-Azhar University in 1996. He also obtained a bachelor's degree in Palestinian community development from Al-Quds Open University in 2004, a master's degree in regional studies from Al-Quds University - Abu Dis in 2008, and a doctorate in political science from the Arab Research Institute in Cairo in 2012. He has a number of studies and research, and has received a number of awards, including: the National Creativity Award from the Palestinian National Forum in 2005, the Inspiration Award from the University of Chicago in the United States in 2016, and the President Mahmoud Abbas Award for Academic Resistance in 2021.
His professional life
Wajih has worked as a journalist for a number of local and international media outlets since 1988. He was a director at the National Authority for Defending Lands and Confronting Settlements between 1996-2005. He then became a lecturer in political science at Palestinian universities since 2012. He was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago in the United States between 2015-2016. He has also worked as an advisor to the Refugee Affairs Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization since 2018. In addition to being the head of the Palestinian Center for Cultural Dialogue and Development since 2019.
His political activity
Abu Dhareefa joined the People's Party in 1985, and was active in the national media field. He is also one of the participants in establishing the Palestinian Journalists Association. He has been a member of the National Authority to Confront Settlements since 1998. He was a member of the Unified Leadership of the First Intifada in Khan Yunis in 1989. He participated in forming the Popular Committees for Refugees in the Gaza Strip, and in establishing the National Authority for the Defense of Palestinian Territories and Confronting Settlements. He became its official spokesperson until the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005. He became a member of the Follow-up Committee for National and Islamic Forces in 2016, a member of the National Authority for the Return Marches in 2018, a member of the Palestinian National Council in 2018, and one of the founders of the Civil Development Forum and the Southern Media Center. He is one of the founders of the Palestinian Center for Democratic Dialogue and Political Development in 2018, a member of the Palestinian Group for Strategic Thinking in 2021, and a member of the Palestinian Central Council in 2022. Wajih participated in the sessions of the national dialogue to end the division in Cairo, Gaza, and Algeria .
Wajih also suffered from the occupation; he was arrested in the occupation prisons five times during the first intifada between 1987-1993, and the occupation pursued him in 1988, and imposed house arrest on him between 1990-1994, in addition to being injured by the occupation’s bullets in 1988 and 1993.
