Hazem Farouk Hassanein was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on July 7, 1981. He is married and has two sons and a daughter. He completed his primary education at Al-Gomhouria Public School and Modern School in Egypt, and Al-Furat School in Gaza. He attended secondary school at Gamal Abdel Nasser School in Gaza, graduating in 1998. He then enrolled at the Islamic University to study Sharia. While imprisoned by the Israeli occupation, he earned a diploma in training preachers and Quran memorizers from the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza in 2012, a bachelor's degree in history from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza in 2016, and a bachelor's degree in political science and media from Al-Ummah Open University in Gaza in 2020. He then enrolled at the Islamic University in Gaza to pursue a master's degree in regional and international studies. He served as the director of the Hadarat Center for Political and Strategic Studies from 2022 and as the spokesperson for the Prisoners' Media Office from the end of 2022.
Hassanein joined Hamas in 1999, and was active in advocacy, political and public work. He joined the military activity and participated in confronting the occupation forces’ incursions into the Shuja’iyya neighborhood in Gaza. He was one of the movement’s cadres inside the occupation prisons, a member of its organizational bodies, and a member of some committees that coordinate activities between the factions. After his release from captivity, he was elected as a member of the movement’s Shura Council in the Shuja’iyya area of Gaza City. He is one of the cadres of the movement’s political department in the Gaza Strip, and he communicates with activists and those interested in the issue of prisoners in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Kuwait and Qatar.
He participates in intellectual seminars, lectures and scientific courses that discuss the issue of prisoners and the Palestinian cause in general, and he is hosted through visual and audio media to talk about the issues of prisoners and the Zionist issue.
Hassanein believes that the settlement process lacks national and factional consensus, and that it has not yielded any national achievement. Rather, it has been an opportunity to exacerbate political discord. The problem, he argues, lies not in the agreements themselves, but in their failure to secure rights for the Palestinian people and their deprivation of a safe life. He believes that the division occurred at a critical juncture in the history of the Palestinian people, and its repercussions have been felt by the people, who have paid the price both internally and externally. He calls for achieving unity, particularly regarding critical issues such as prisoners and the holy sites. He believes that national partnership is essential as a catalyst for national unity, starting with the Palestine Liberation Organization and then extending to other institutions. He believes that unity among the Palestinian people and the existence of a unified force will shape the future of Palestine and its cause, and will bring the liberation of Palestine closer.
Hassanein believes in resistance by all means, and he believes that experience with the occupation has shown that the Palestinian people need resistance in its various forms, especially armed resistance. He believes that resistance is not the monopoly of any one group, and that the Palestinian cause needs everyone. He believes that the solution to the Palestinian question must be comprehensive, from the river to the sea, but that within the political framework, interim solutions can be accepted, provided that the rest of Palestine is not relinquished. He believes that the return of refugees is linked to a comprehensive Palestinian solution, but that there is no harm in an interim solution whereby refugees return to the 1967 territories and then return to the homes from which they were displaced in 1948. He also believes that the future of the Palestinian cause is difficult to predict at this time because its circumstances are linked to several factors, including: the behavior of the occupation, the strength of the resistance in deterring the occupation, the strength of the Palestinian system, and its ability to overcome its differences.
Hassanein believes that Palestine lacks a political system in the professional or scientific sense, and that the current system is incomplete. The West Bank is governed by an authority under occupation, while Hamas governs Gaza within an incomplete government due to the blockade. He argues that the fundamental issue should be discussing a national partnership that lays the foundation for building a state and its institutions, and then moving to determining the type of political system through fair elections. He believes that peoples have the right to self-determination and to choose their leaders through free and fair elections. He describes what happened in the Arab world during the past decade as an Arab Spring that turned into a conspiracy due to the coup by complicit institutions and figures.
Hasanein suffered in his life; he was arrested by the occupation during the invasion of the Shuja’iyya neighborhood on February 11, 2004, after a battle with the resistance that led to the martyrdom of his brother Ashraf and a number of resistance fighters and the injury of a number of others. The occupation stormed his house in a brutal manner, and Hasanein was subjected to a harsh interrogation. The occupation sentenced him to twenty years, then reduced it to sixteen years. He was accused of trying to kill two Zionist soldiers and of belonging to the Hamas movement. The occupation also demolished his family’s house in 2004 and in 2014, and his parents were unable to visit him for many years. His mother died on October 9, 2017, and he was unable to say goodbye to her. He has been banned from traveling since his release.
