Khitam Abu Daf , born Khitam al-Wasifi (April 6, 1966 – December 1, 2023), was a Palestinian physicist, researcher, and lecturer . She served as a professor of optoelectronics physics at the Islamic University of Gaza , and as deputy dean of the Faculty of Science at the same university. Some sources refer to her as the "Sheikha of Physicists."
Her biography
Khitam Yousef Deeb Al-Wasify graduated from the Physics Department at the Faculty of Science at the Islamic University of Gaza . She then worked as a teaching assistant at the university from 1996 to 2006, completing her studies with a master's degree in optoelectronics physics in 2002. She also earned a PhD in biophysics from the Sudan University of Science and Technology in 2010. Her thesis was "The Effect of Waves Emitted by Mobile Base Stations on Living Cells." She then worked as an assistant professor, then an associate professor, until she reached the rank of professor of optoelectronics physics in 2021.
She has published approximately 60 scientific papers in the field of electromagnetism and two books for a German foundation on the effect of mobile phones on living human and plant cells. She has also participated in several local and international conferences. She received the Palestinian Woman of the Year Award in the Intellectual Field for the year 2022 from the Palestinian Ministry of Women's Affairs . She had founded the Al-Midad Foundation for Culture and Science.
She was nominated for the 2021 Palestinian legislative elections , which were scheduled to take place on May 22, 2021, but President Mahmoud Abbas announced their postponement on April 30, 2021, indefinitely. She was also the Secretary of the Women's Movement in Hamas .
It is noteworthy that she has been married since 1987 and has 7 children (4 boys and 3 girls). Her husband is Mahmoud Abu Daf, the former dean of the Faculty of Education at the Islamic University of Gaza. She, her husband, and their family members were assassinated on December 1, 2023, during an air strike carried out by the Israeli Air Force on their home, during the Israeli response to Operation Flood of Al-Aqsa .
She said
Khitam said that building a family is “ a great trust with which God chooses His servants. The foundation of the upbringing that I have adopted as a method for my children is based on three foundations: Islamic moral values and performing religious duties, instilling the importance of knowledge and learning, and preparing them for jihad in the way of God. These foundations complement each other. We do not want a girl or a young man who only prays, nor a praying man with virtuous morals only. Rather, in addition to these and those, we want a generation of jihadists who seek to liberate their land and their sanctities through knowledge, excellence, and good education .”
She said to the Palestinian woman, " To you, my companion in knowledge, my light on the long road, my champion of the cause, to you as you strive despite all the difficulties, you must realize that the Palestinian reality is difficult, and that change is not easy. Therefore, you must feel the responsibilities placed on your shoulders, and appreciate your distinguished role in making an impact within society. Do not forget, my study friend, that Palestinian minds are pregnant with creativity and ideas, but they are waiting for the real opportunity, so be the opportunity, and fly towards every sky in which there is a launching pad for this creativity.
And before you open the first page of the book of this endeavor, you must dedicate your work and knowledge to God Almighty, and ask for the strength to help you in this great trust. And do not forget that your being chosen because of your Palestinian identity has a right over you, so that you may be the intellectual, scientific and jihadi model that resists the injustice of occupation and the darkness of ignorance. Therefore, take the initiative and set out towards the goal with your giving, knowledge and distinction, and walk in the name of God and His eye watching over you
