Professor Dr. Hazem Mohammed Abu Shawish is a specialist in Analytical Chemistry, with a research focus on the development and application of electrochemical sensors. His work emphasizes the design of potentiometric sensors for determining a wide range of substances—including pharmaceuticals, dyes, and surfactants—in various environmental and clinical samples. These sensors are based on plastic membranes, coated wire, and chemically modified carbon paste electrodes. Additionally, Dr. Abu Shawish has developed sensors using specific compounds or complexes for the detection of metal ions and anions, such as copper, chromium, lead, and mercury, by leveraging the unique chemical properties of these materials.
Dr. Abu Shawish earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Cairo University in 2005, preceded by a Master’s degree from Al-Azhar University – Gaza in 2002, and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Tanta University in 1993. His academic interests encompass electrochemical sensors, analytical chemistry, and environmental chemistry.
As an educator, he has taught numerous courses, including Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Advanced Analytical Chemistry, General Chemistry, and Medical Devices and Equipment. His commitment to academic excellence is also reflected in his administrative contributions. He currently serves as Dean of the Deanship of Scientific Research since 2021. Previously, he held the roles of Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (2013–2016) and Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies (2008–2010).
Dr. Abu Shawish’s work has advanced both the theoretical understanding and practical applications of electrochemical sensing, with significant implications for environmental monitoring, clinical diagnostics, and industrial analysis.
