In a first for Palestine, Clarivate and Thomson Reuters have included Dr. Majdi Mafarja, a professor of artificial intelligence at Birzeit University, among the world's most influential researchers in computer science. He is the first researcher from a Palestinian university to be included on the list.
This year, only 110 computer science researchers worldwide, and 6,602 researchers in all fields, were awarded this title, selected from a pool of 8 million researchers worldwide .
This list includes a group of the world's most influential researchers, who have been frequently cited by their peers over the past decade (2011–2021). This inclusion recognizes the value of exceptional research work, demonstrated by the production of numerous highly cited papers that ranked among the top 1% of citations in the field of computer science in the Web of Science in 2021. 6,602, or approximately 0.1%, of the world's researchers, across 21 specific and interdisciplinary research fields, earned this exclusive distinction.
Dr. Majdi Mafarja expressed his happiness at achieving this accomplishment, which is relevant to Palestine in general, and Birzeit University in particular, the premier incubator for academic and research creativity. Dr. Mafarja said that this achievement is the result of continuous work and great effort in cooperation with distinguished local and international research colleagues in the field. He pointed out that as a result of this research, he identified a major problem in the rapidly growing delivery and e-commerce sectors. He decided to utilize the results of this research in the industry, so he founded his startup company, LogesTechs , which built a system to manage delivery and logistics companies. This system played a major role in improving operational performance in companies that adopt this system, through the application of artificial intelligence algorithms that Dr. Mafarja worked on in his research.
It is worth noting that Dr. Mufarjah obtained his PhD from Malaysia in 2012, the same year he started working in the Department of Computer Science at Birzeit University. He also teaches in the Master of Computing and Master of Software Engineering programs. In addition to his teaching duties, he has continued his research efforts and, in collaboration with prominent researchers in his field, has been able to publish more than eighty research papers in prestigious scientific journals in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning .
Mufarjeh worked to promote a culture of scientific research among the master's students whose theses he supervised, enabling students to publish their research findings in prestigious international journals . Mufarjeh was recently listed among the top 100,000 global researchers and among the top 2% of researchers in their subfields in the Scientific Output Evaluation Database, prepared by Stanford University in collaboration with the international publishing company Elsevier , for two consecutive years, 2020 and 2021. He also received the Distinguished Researcher Award at Birzeit University in 2019, in addition to winning the Best Scientific Research Award at the level of West Bank universities in the same year.
