Bilal Muhammad Saeed al-Hassan ( 1939 - August 8 , 2024 ) is an independent Palestinian journalist and thinker who lived in Damascus . He is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and a member of the Palestinian National Council . He was active in committees and conferences related to the right of return . 

His life

Bilal Muhammad Saeed Al-Hassan was born in the village of Ijzim in the Haifa district in 1939 , and he emigrated with his family to Lebanon following the Palestinian Nakba . He comes from a prominent Palestinian family, as he is the brother of Khaled Al-Hassan, the theorist of the Palestinian revolution who headed the political department of the Palestine Liberation Organization and was known for his special relationship with leaders in the Gulf and with King Hassan II. He is also the brother of the late Hani Al-Hassan and Ali Al-Hassan, who are also well-known Palestinian figures. He is also the uncle of Saeed Al-Hassan, the coordinator of the General Conference in Support of Jerusalem. He lived in exile between several capitals, including Beirut, Damascus, Tunis, and Rabat. He was known for his criticism of the Oslo Accords , and was interested in defending the right of return for the Palestinians. Al-Hassan is considered one of the generation of journalists who founded modern Arab journalism, and he wrote hundreds of articles on the Palestinian cause and various Arab issues. 

His contributions

He held several positions in the field of journalism and made notable contributions to the development of Arab journalism and making it a platform for critical thinking and political expression. He began his career by writing for the magazine "Al-Hurriya", which was issued by the Arab Nationalist Movement from Beirut, and among its writers was the novelist Ghassan Kanafani. He then worked to establish the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Safir" in 1974, which is one of the most important newspapers in the Arab world.

After the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, he was forced to leave Beirut and settle in Damascus, where his journalistic and political activities increased significantly. Al-Hassan moved to Tunisia to supervise the establishment of the newspaper "Al-Youm Al-Sabea", a Palestinian magazine supported by Yasser Arafat. This newspaper was known for the participation of an elite group of Arab writers, authors and intellectuals, such as Joseph Samaha, Mahmoud Darwish, Emile Habibi, Samih Al-Qasim, and others. Bilal Al-Hassan was its editor-in-chief. After the newspaper "Al-Youm Al-Sabea" was closed in 1991, Al-Hassan moved to work for the newspaper "Al-Hayat" published in London, then became a writer for the newspaper "Asharq Al-Awsat".

He died on August 8, 2024, in Paris , at the age of eighty-five.
