Hikmat al-Masri (1907-1994) was a Palestinian businessman and politician , born in Nablus  to a wealthy family active in economics and politics.  He studied in Nablus and then moved to Beirut where he obtained a BA in Economics and Business from the American University. He founded the Vegetable Oil Company in Nablus and managed it for many years.  He died in Nablus in 1994 and was buried there. 

His positions

Al-Masry held several positions, the most prominent of which were: membership in the House of Representatives in 1950, and in 1956 he became the Speaker of the Jordanian House of Representatives. Hekmat Al-Masry became a member of the Jordanian Senate until 1970, and then returned to membership in the Senate again on January 12, 1984. The last position he held was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of An-Najah National University from 1977 until his death in 1994.

His contributions to the national movement

Hekmat Taher Darwish Al-Masry became involved in the national movement, where he held the position of Secretary of the Muslim Brotherhood in the city of Nablus in 1929, in many committees and clubs, including the Arming Club, which was held in Nablus in 1931. He contributed to the establishment of the first national committee in Palestine, which led the great strike in the 1936 revolution . He was arrested by the colonial government forces for four months in Sarafand prison, following his national activity during the first phase of the 1936 revolution. 

Al-Masry contributed to the establishment of the National Committee that was formed in Nablus and all the cities of Palestine following the clashes that occurred after the issuance of the Palestine partition resolution issued by the United Nations on November 29, 1947. After that, he was elected as a representative of Nablus in Parliament in 1950, and then he was re-elected as a representative in Parliament again in 1956.

In addition, he played a role in establishing the National Socialist Party , became a member of the Jordanian Senate in 1963 and became Vice President of the Council in 1984. He played an active role in establishing the Palestine Liberation Organization and was a member of the first Palestinian National Council held in Jerusalem in 1964 and Vice President of the Council. 

Awards and Honors

Hekmat received the Jordanian Star Medal in 1955, which is awarded in the same way as the Renaissance Medal to those who have performed distinguished work and provided national, nationalist, or international services, whether Arab or foreign civilians or military personnel
