Yusuf Beidas was a Lebanese businessman of Palestinian origin from the city of Nazareth, widely known as the “Onassis of the East.” He studied at the Bishop’s School in Jerusalem, where he was born, and showed a strong aptitude for mathematics during his secondary education. After graduating, he was appointed as an employee at Barclays Bank in Jerusalem, where he gained extensive experience in banking and finance, eventually becoming Head of the Credit Department. In 1943, he joined the Arab Bank.
In 1948, Beidas emigrated to Lebanon, where in 1951 he founded Intra Bank, building upon the foundation of the World Traders Office. Within a few years, Intra Bank became the largest bank in Lebanon. In 1955, he established a major hotel enterprise, followed by several real estate companies. He also acquired shares in Middle East Airlines and purchased the American Printing Press, aspiring to transform it into a major international publishing institution for global magazines and to publish the Encyclopaedia Britannica in Arabic, Persian, and other languages.
His ambitious projects extended to urban development plans for Beirut, the establishment of a film production studio, the founding of the Arab Real Estate Bank, and the creation of an aircraft maintenance and repair company. In short, Intra Bank evolved—under Yusuf Beidas’s leadership—into a vast financial empire.
By the early second half of the twentieth century, Beidas had become a legend for his remarkable success, transforming Intra Bank from a modest, marginal institution into a far-reaching financial empire whose investments extended beyond Lebanon to Europe, the United States, Africa, and Latin America.
